Nominations for the annual Academy Awards have been announced year after year.But who picked them? And who selects the winners. Here is a tip for your current knowledge.
According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 5,722 Academy members voted with secret ballots sent through the mail.
Academy members select nominees in their respective branches (acting, directing, etc.), while all members select the Best Picture nominees. Then the Academy's entire active and life membership votes to pick winners in each category.
Membership in the Academy is by invitation of the Board of Governors and is limited to those who have achieved distinction in the arts and sciences of motion pictures.
The 13 membership categories are Actors, Art Directors, Cinematographers, Directors, Executives, Film Editors, Music, Producers, Public Relations, Short Films and Feature Animation, Sound, Visual Effects and Writers.
